MUSIC & THE ARTS

The Rory Gallagher Rock and Blues Music Festival

There is a strong musical tradition within the culture of Donegal and nowhere more so than in our local heritage town of Ballyshannon. Ballyshannon gave us one of the greatest guitar players of all time and in tribute to him now annually hosts the Rory Gallagher Rock and Blues Music Festival every June Bank Holiday weekend. Rock-lovers from all over the world descend on the oldest town in Ireland to rock out at one of the greatest street festivals in Ireland.

The Ballyshannon Folk and Traditional Music Festival

Not to be outdone by the rockers, fans of trad and folk music arrive in their droves every August Bank Holiday for another street festival when Ballyshannon celebrates the very best of Irish traditional and folk music. Running since 1977 the Ballyshannon Festival used to run alongside the giant festivals in Lisdoonvarna and Ballisodare, many of which no longer exist unfortunately, but Ballyshannon has gone from strength to strength.
